How it works
Hypnotherapy works on the
cause and effect principle. During our formative years, any strong emotional
trauma that we
experience or any unresolved
conflicts we have are pushed down into the deeper parts of the mind in an
attempt to
protect the developing personality.
The issues and traumas still have the need for some kind of expression and the residual emotion attached to the issues, whether
it be anxiety, guilt, shame, fear etc... surfaces. In an attempt to get away from these trapped emotions and the unwanted feelings they bring
we can develop unhealthy behaviour patterns that help us to suppress and escape them. For example we may over eat, excessively smoke or drink, we may also find that
we avoid certain situations or people which our mind may associate with previous traumas. It is these past events that result in the development many of the symptoms described
above.
Whilst under hypnosis the critical conscious part of the mind is taken up with the enjoyable relaxing
sensations
that accompany hypnosis, thereby giving direct access to the subconscious mind. As the problem has its’ root
cause here
in the subconscious parts of the mind, this part of the mind must be accessed to resolve the issue. By resolving
the base issue
the symptoms are released.
Hypnotherapy falls under two main categories, these being suggestion therapy and hypno-analysis.
Suggestion Therapy
Suggestion therapy
is
used for areas such as smoking cessation, weight loss, exam nerves, anxiousness about driving test, sports
performance
and motivation. This type of therapy normally takes from 1 to 3 sessions and as the name suggests the
main strategy is
to bring about positive change through the use of suggestion which is absorbed and acted on by the
subconscious mind.
Hypno-analysis
Hypno-analysis utilises various hypno therapeutic interventions to get to
the
root cause of more deep seated problems. The bulk of the time is spent using free
association carried out under hypnosis. This allows the subconscious mind to filter through the past in order to access
the
sensitising traumatic events or conflicts that are causing the symptoms. Hypno analysis normally takes approsimately 8 - 12 sessions
however as each person is unique the number of sessions required may vary.
As with all therapeutic intervention and healing modality, no guarantees of cure can be given.
A free hypnotherapeutic CD is provided for each client to help reinforce the therapy.

ICHP therapists are ethical therapists who abide by a strict code of ethics. Whatever comes up in therapy is treated with
the highest confidentiality that fits within our duty of care towards the client.
Hypnosis is extremely safe and I am not aware of anyone being harmed or having any negative side effects as a result
of hypnotherapy. Most people can be hypnotised, however, if you suffer from epilepsy or are on medication for psychological issues, please
consult with your G.P. before making an appointment.
You can't become stuck in Hypnosis. Hypnosis is a very natural state which most people enter several times a day
without realising it. For example, most people who drive will have experienced
'highway hypnosis' where you arrive at your destination with no conscious recollection of doing the driving. Another example
would be when reading a book or watching a movie at the cinema, you become less involved in what's going on around you as your
attention is drawn in to the stimulus in front of you. If something happens you simply 'snap out of it' and your attention is
back to normal. It's the same with clinical hypnosis.
Most people have a skewed perception of hypnosis mainly due to the
stage shows that many of us have witenssed where the hypnotist makes members of his audience do the most ridiculous
things on stage seemingly without them having any say in the matter.
There are many misconceptions surrounding the hypnotic state mainly due to these outrageous stage shows. Stage
hypnotists choose extremely suggestible members of their audience who have a strong desire to take part in the show and have
high expectations and beliefs that they will do these outrageous acts if picked.
However, you cannot be made
to do anything against your will under hypnosis.
In fact we often describe the state as 'conscious hypnosis' as
during hypnosis the client has complete control and is aware of everything going on. On occassion a client may even feel that
they did not 'go under'. Hypnosis is simply a relaxed state with heightened concentration; hypnosis itself is not the
therapy, therapeutic intervention is administered whilst the client is in hypnosis as this state is unique in that it affords
the therapist access to the deeper facets of the psyche where the root cause of our problems are buried.
